Vincenzo Bellini’s La Sonnambula. Bellini’s sweet love story is filled with vocal fireworks, including one of opera’s most spectacular mad scenes. The title role of the sleepwalking Amina has attracted some of the greatest singers in history, beginning with the legendary Giuditta Pasta, who starred in the 1831 premiere. Then Bellini experienced the re-occurrence of an illness which had emerged in Venice due to pressure of work and the bad weather, and which consistently recurred after each opera. The gastro-enteric condition—which he described as "a tremendous inflammatory gastric bilious fever"— resulted in his being cared for by friends. Bellini’s pastoral opera “La Sonnambula” made a welcome return to La Fenice, in a revival of Bepi Morassi’s 2012, widely-acclaimed production.
